Democrats Unveil NH Republicans for Obama

Three Merrimack residents part of lengthy list of current or former Republicans voting for President Obama,

Republican Tammy Perron, a mother of three from Salem, didn't vote for Mitt Romney in the Primary. And she doesn't plan to on Election Day, choosing instead to support the incumbent Democrat because of what she calls the GOP ticket's "anti-choice" foundation.

"I can say without hesitation, when it comes to women's health, today's Republican Party is just plain backwards," said Perron, joining an Obama campaign media call Tuesday to join a new coalition, Granite State Republicans for Obama.

"It starts with their nominee for president, Mitt Romney," she said. "Romney promised to get rid of funding for planned parenthood, a vital health care provider for thousands of Granite State women," Perron said.

Perron is one of about 100 current or former Republicans joining Granite State Republicans for Obama, a coalition the Obama campaign rolled out in coincide with the start of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

Bernie Geaghan of Salem, a long-time Republican who voted for George W. Bush in 2000, said he also decided to support Obama on Nov. 6.

The "rhetoric coming out of the Republican Party lately has just turned me off,"  Geaghan said.

Former state Sen. Rick Russman of Kingston, another life-long Republican, said he joined Republicans for Obama because of Romney positions on the environment.

Russman accused Republicans of trying to roll back environmental regulations, and he said Romney policies would open the door to drilling off of the New Hampshire coastline. Obama recognizes certain environmental protections, including smart investments for clean energy, according to Russman.

Besides the new Republicans for Obama coalition, the Obama campaign plans to conduct phone banks this week, including neighborhood canvasses, to reach potential supporters of various political backgrounds.

Republicans continue to work on voter out-reach, too. Former Gov. John H. Sununu, a key Romney surrogate, participated Tuesday in a Google Hangout chat, in which he urged Republicans and independents to reach out to their neighbors, family and friends to support the Romney-Ryan ticket.
