Fish and Game Club Calls off Fishing Derby

Unseasonable warm winter makes ice unsafe for annual derby held at Horseshoe Pond Fish and Game Club.

Due to the unseasonably warm winter in New Hampshire this year, the has been forced to cancel its ice fishing derby.

A letter sent by the chairman of the derby, Mark Frechette, cited "poor weather conditions and safety reasons" for why the event, scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 18, was called off.

"There will be a breakfast and lunch at the club on Saturday the 18th so we can inform anyone that shows up that we will not be having a derby that day, and that it is in their best interest that they do not venture onto the ice," Frechette said in the letter, the full text of which is below.

I regret to inform you that due to poor weather conditions and safety reasons the 2012 Horseshoe Fish and Game Club Ice Fishing Derby will be canceled this year.

In speaking with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission. In an event such as ours that draws so many people there is great concern for the safety of the public. To which a mutual decision has been made for the cancellation.

I would like to thank our community's support over the years in this worthwhile effort that benefits our scholarship fund that helps young people in their desire for education.

Thank you,
