Busy morning in Merrimack

Early reports from readers are that lines were very long when the polls opened today. Traffic was backed up down Baboosic Lake Road over the Route 3 overpass at 7 a.m., according to Town Councilor Bill Boyd. He also said that as of 10 a.m., more than 3,200 ballots had been cast in town.

A reader emailed this morning to say at 6:40 parking was tough.

"Parking @ 6:40 am was INSANE!!!!!!!  They were parking at the tennis courts and half way down the hill as well as every parking lot was full."

How Merrimack has voted in the past

One thing is certain in Merrimack, at least over the last few elections. If the presidential pick for the country is Republican, Merrimack will have voted in line with the country. Though that's not to say it hasn't been close.

According to results compiled by the Secretary of State's office, Merrimack has elected the Republican candidates during every election since 2000.

In 2008, Merrimack picked John McCain and Sarah Palin over winners Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but only by 242 votes. McCain/Palin earned 7,558 votes to Obama/Biden's 7,316.

In 2004, Merrimack voted in line with the country to re-elect George W. Bush and Dick Cheney to four more years. The Republican duo beat John Kerry and John Edwards 7,927 to 6,682 – a difference of 1,245 votes.

In 2000, Merrimack favored the Bush/Cheney ticket over the Al Gore and Joe Lieberman ticket by  vote of 6,239 to 5,571. With 668 votes splitting the two parties, it seems Merrimack voters weren't completely unconvinced that four more years with Democratic leadership would be a bad thing.

Will Merrimack continue to favor the Republican ticket today and elect Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan over four more years of Barack Obama and Joe Biden? If we're going by history, the answer is yes, but the reality is, we won't be absolutely certain until the end of the day.
