Stanley Elevator Celebrating 60 Years

Founder installed his first elevator at St. Anselm College before starting company.

Stanley Elevator Company, Inc., a company founded and based in southern New Hampshire, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2012.

Although elevators are rarely top of mind among the general public, over the decades Stanley employees have seen first hand the impact their customer-focused service can have on people in all walks of life.

“I work with a group of individuals who care about the daily impact their job has on the elderly person trying to get into the church or into their apartment,” said Stanley Field Operations Manager John Dalton, who has worked for Stanley since 1996. “Our entire team cares about the patients in the hospitals who depend on the elevators and about the people working in factories or offices. We have countless customer success stories about times when floods or other incidents have severely damaged elevators within buildings, and we have pulled out all the stops to get buildings up and operational again. We take tremendous pride in our ability to solve problems for our customers and keep their buildings safe.”

That tradition and level of commitment has been at the heart of the company since Irving M. Stanley installed his first elevator in 1951, in the administration building of St. Anselm College, in Manchester. Having made more profit than he initially thought he would after installing the $7,500 unit, Stanley offered to return money to the school. St. Anselm Business Administrator Fr. John Lynch suggested he use the funds to start a company. In 1952, Stanley Elevator was born.

Stanley was soon joined by his sons, Warren, Bill and Richard, and the company opened its first headquarters on Pine Street Extension in Nashua in 1959. Stanley moved its headquarters from Nashua to Merrimack in 1999. Stanley also has facilities in Wellesley, Mass., and Lewiston, Maine, and serves customers in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The company remains family-owned and operated, and many of Stanley’s employees have worked for the company for more than 25 years.

Today, the Stanley team focuses on maintenance, modernization, and design and installation of state-of-the-art elevator systems in a wide range of buildings and facilities, from residences, to hospitals, to large corporate offices. In 2008, Stanley installed the first of its many machine room-less elevators, making the company a leader in the market for energy-efficient building solutions.

Stanley Elevator helps numerous local and regional charities each year, including sponsoring breast cancer awareness events, “adopting” families at Christmas, and supporting many fundraising activities at numerous schools and hospitals.

To this day, its first customer, St. Anselm College, still relies on Stanley Elevator for quality elevator service.
