Joanne Dowdell addresses her campaign exit in Salem on Saturday.

Portsmouth businesswoman Joanne Dowdell spoke at the Fran Brennan Memorial Scholarship Breakfast at Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church in Salem one day after she announced the suspension of her campaign for the Democratic nomination for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District.

In the video above, watch Dowdell's remarks on why she decided to leave the race, saying "my time, effort and resources are going to be better spent helping elect Democrats in New Hampshire."

Former Congresswman Carol Shea-Porter, who will now likely face incumbent Republican Frank Guinta in the fall, was also in attendance Saturday.
