Despite the birth of a lot of new business in Merrimack (think 100 stores at the Merrimack Premium Outlets, Darlene's Bath & Body Lounge and Center Stage Pole Dance & Fitness, among several more) it saw others, like Out of the Woods Cafe and, more recently, Olympic Video shuttering this year. This got us thinking: Which Merrimack business do you miss most?

We miss Newicks Seafood Restaurant. Our family used to love going out to dinner there. They had big tables, the prices were reasonable and the kids loved it.

Gary, I too miss Newicks. Fortunately we still have good seafood in town at the Lobster Boat, not quite as roomy, but still good food.

LOL. I waitressed at Newicks in Hampton for three summers in college would have been longer, but that one was the first to go :( I didn't know this until about a month ago, but they opened one in Concord on Loudon Road in 2007. Definitely a shorter drive than Dover if you have a true hankering for Newick's.

It wasn't so much the food at Newicks, although that was good too, but more the atmosphere. We tend to have a big group of extended family and kids and it was just a great place to have a big group dinner without breaking the bank. We are also up by exit 12 so it was right around the corner. We tend to hit the Weathervane out on 101 for those dinners now.

When I think of Newick's I think of my dad always wanting to go their for the chowder and the "lunch size" portion during dinner :-) Was definitely a great place for larger groups to eat!!

For me, it's not so much a single business, but rather a type of business that we've lost over the years. For me, the more painful losses have been:
1. In-town auto parts store. Yea, I can go to NAPA in Bedford or one of the ones on 101A - but having Towers in Connell's plaza was great
2. In-town hardware store that's open longer hours. When we lost Rannacher/Hammar, we went back to RF Lumber as our sole store - which is a great store - but their weekend hours really don't fit the times you really need stuff. The "older" days in town when we had Merrimack HW and Benson's HW was great.
there are probably others - but those two come to mind more often than not...

Totally agree with you on both of these Andy. I wasn't around when the businesses you mention were here (at least I don't think I was) but having to run over to 101A to hit VIP, Home Depot, or Lowes or go up to Bedford for Napa or Lowes is a bummer sometimes. I think 4 times out of 5 when I have needed to run to the hardware/lumber yard to get a quick item, RF Lumber was closed ... guess my work hours don't line up with theirs. :-) I have had luck at Tractor Supply for some things but they are definitely not a full-fledged HW store.

Newicks was one of the best places for seafood. Milford Fish Market also has great food. One of the cooks from Newicks now owns it.

Well, you asked for recent so maybe this doesn't fit what you are looking for, but in the mid 80's there was a discount bookstore in the old Shaw's plaza. It was a great place to buy gifts and to find some good deals on all types of books.

Rannacher's, Benson's, (and later, the antique "barn" run by Linda Lojko), The cowboy bar (anyone else remember that one?), The BBQ restaurant @ Connell's, more recently the consignment shop at Shaw's plaza, the neat little restaurant that was in a victorian house where now the "newer" Shaw's on Rte 3 is... the used book 'shack' that a dear friend owned where Axel's is now... LOL the list is endless! Can you tell I've lived here 30+ years?

Rannacher's (because I couldn't always get things at the big box stores that I could there plus the service was usually better), Madden's (LOVED their breakfast buffet on the weekends!), and Zyla's (for the quirkiness and prices).

Eat here and get gas!, I just remember the sign. Lone Star Ranch - Could hear the music on Wire Rd. Used to be a hotdog place near Reeds Ferry Lumber back in the 70's, That was considered a treat.

Tim Duttons' comments bring back memories, I definitely remember "Eat here and Get Gas". Never ate there, but did get gas. For sure the original Pizza Man by the original Bike shop and Police Station, Pizza Man had exceptional steak & cheese and frozen mugs. Regarding Bise's IGA, I actually worked at the original Bise's IGA just on the hill up from the main Fire Station.
