Merrimack Preparing to Administer PSATs

PSATs designed to prep juniors for SATs.

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test co-sponsored by the  College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be given at Merrimack High School on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria and classrooms.

The College Board has listed the following reasons why college-bound sophomores and juniors should consider taking the PSAT’s:

  1. Find out what the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is like.  You will probably take the SAT when you apply for admission to college.  The PSAT is a lot like it.
  2. Predict your own SAT Scores from your PSAT scores.
  3. Compare your scores with those of applicants at hundreds of colleges.
  4. Estimate your chances of getting into and succeeding at the colleges of your choice.
  5. Participate in the Student Search Service and have your name sent (if you wish) to colleges that are looking for students like you.
  6. See how you stand among all juniors in the country.
  7. Enter the competition for scholarships awarded through the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students and the National Hispanic Scholar Awards Program.
Applications may be picked up at the Guidance Department or downloaded from the MHS website.  All applications and the fee ($25 check payable to Merrimack High School) must be returned to the Guidance Department by Oct. 16.

Students must bring with them two sharpened No. 2 pencils in order to take the test.  A calculator may be used on the math sections.  The PSAT/NMSQT Student Bulletin explains the types of calculators permitted. The test is over around 11 a.m. Transportation should be arranged ahead of time.

If parents have any questions, they should contact their child’s counselor at 424-6204, ext. 2.
