Bacteria Advisories Warn Against Swimming at Watson Park, Horseshoe Pond

Merrimack Health Officer Al Turner issued the following advisory pertaining to water quality at Watson Park:

"High levels of bacteria have been detected in the Souhegan River as it flows through Watson Park in Merrimack. This water is currently not suitable for wading or swimming. Exposure to this water may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever. Children, the elderly and others with sensitive immune systems are especially vulnerable."

A yellow advisory sign is posted on the kiosk in the parking lot at Watson Park advising swimmers of the risk.

Also remaining under advisory is Horseshoe Pond, which was put on alert due to a cyanobacteria bloom discovered there last week.

A possible toxin-producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom was spotted around the pond last week. Blue-green clouds have been reported in areas all around the pond prompting the warning to avoid contact with the water in areas experiencing bloom conditions. Pets should also be kept out of the water.

The water was scheduled to be resampled Wednesday, but as yet, the status has not changed

Patch will send out updates when the advisories on both water bodies are cleared.
