Merrimack School Board Seeks Input From Parents

Ever wished school vacations were scheduled differently? Do you like the calendar as it is? Whatever your opinion, if you are a Merrimack parent, the Merrimack School Board wants to here from you!

Gary G. Krupp

At its February 18, 2013 meeting, the Merrimack School Board discussed the proposed 2013-2014 school calendar.  As noted during the meeting, both the Merrimack Teacher's Association and the Merrimack Educational Support Staff Association are surveyed for input regarding holidays, vacations and school start dates to ensure the school calendar best accommodates the desires of the staff.  What is missing is input from parents.

Do you have an opinion on consolidating Spring and Winter break?  Do you think more holidays are needed?  Does the school start date affect your Summer vacation plans?  Or do you like things the way they are proposed?  Although no formal survey mechanism to collect input from parents currently exists, School Board Chairman, Chris Ortega, asked parents to review the proposed calendar and submit their feedback to board members directly.

The proposed school calendar is attached to this article. Whatever your opinion, if you are a parent with children in the Merrimack School District, please review the calendar and then use the link below to contact your School Board members.  A quick phone call, e-mail or letter is a great way to ensure your needs are considered as this next school calendar is finalized.

Contact information including phone numbers, addresses and email addresses for each school board member can be found here: http://www.merrimack.k12.nh.us/board_members.cfm?master=292695&cfm=end

The Board will take up the calendar again at its next meeting, March 4, 2013 where any motions to change the calendar will be considered.  Be sure to get your feedback in before the meeting.

I think they should still start before Labor Day that way they're out of school before June 16th. It'll be better for the kids and easier to put them in summer camp .. That way they're not transitioning from school to camp midweek. Easier for the kids and parents :-)

Would like to see the kids start the last two days in August to extend their Christmas vacation by two days giving the a FULL two weeks of vacation only because it is always hard going back the day after New Year especially if the family gets together and celebrate...the other thing I would like to see if remove the February & April school vacation give them one in March and let them out earlier for summer vacation so that they have a longer time to enjoy their summer.
Gary G. Krupp February 19, 2013 at 06:24 PM
Denise - I wholeheartedly agree with you. I have talked to many parents on this issue and your feedback regarding combining Spring and Winter breaks is by far the most common suggestion I hear. It will be interesting to see if enough parents think like we do, submit that feedback, and convince the Board to make a change.

Studies have shown that longer breaks are actually detrimental to students education because they forget more and schools have to spend longer periods of time re-teaching everything that was forgotten. The question that should be asked is what is more important, convenience for families or the education of the children in our school districts. Mr Krupp and others here seem only interested in convenience for themselves. I hope our school board equally weighs education when confronted by the mobs whipped up by this emotionally drive article.
Gary G. Krupp February 19, 2013 at 07:23 PM
Emotionally driven Joe? Can you point to the emotional part for me? The School Board Chair closed last night's meeting by requesting input from parents. This blog simply repeats that request. I'm not asking anyone to agree with my personal point of view but rather to submit their own points of view. Parents are the customers in this enterprise and it is not wrong to seek their opinions.

I have heard this as well but, is one more week of summer vacation really going to make a difference. Parents can and should continue studying and reviewing with their children during the summer. Another thing to consider is all the stops and starts during the school year. Students are not focused the day before a break and then there is the "getting back to business" period when they return. Students and teachers lose momentum.

Gary isn't this where I submit it? If there is another site to do this let me know I will do it..Thanks

Denise - While School Board Members may read the comments to this article, it is probably not the best way to submit your feedback. I recommend sending the board members (or at least the School Board Chair) an e-mail directly. Their e-mail addresses can be found here: http://www.merrimack.k12.nh.us/board_members.cfm?master=292695&cfm=end

Teacher workshops are a complete waste of time and money. I agree with removing either the February or April vacation. Schools in other states like Florida only have one. There will have to be some serious convincing to those parents that have structured vacations. Although, this week they probably would have missed 2 days due to snow since we are paranoid to drive a bus in the snow.
Denise Hoffman February 26, 2013 at 01:17 PM
I agree with no teacher workshops. They can do it after school, on weekends or even give the kids a 1/2 day off which constitutes the children being in school for that day which doesn't push the date further back for their summer vacation.

The second review of the proposed school calendar will happen at tonight's (3/4/13) school board meeting. The short meeting agenda can be found here: http://www.merrimack.k12.nh.us/files/filesystem/03-04-13%20Preliminary%20Agenda.pdf
