Merrimack Bank Of America Robbed; Suspect In Custody

Update 1 p.m.: Merrimack Police have a suspect in custody following a robbery at Bank of America in the old Shaw's plaza Wednesday morning.

Lt. Denise Roy, who was on the scene, said the suspect was apprehended a short time after fleeing on foot headed north up Daniel Webster Highway.

The suspect did initially get away with an undisclosed amount of cash and no one was injured in the incident.

The call came in to police around 10:45 a.m. and Roy said they had the suspect, who was wearing a disguise, in custody about 15 or 20 minutes later.

She said he never showed any sort of weapon at the bank.

"We have recovered evidence and he is in custody," Roy said. "And it was all because of the help of the public."

Roy said she couldn't stress how important the public's help is in cases like this.

"We don't have the man power to be everywhere all the time," Roy said.

The robbery was the third bank robbery since People's United Bank was hit by a man armed with what he said was a bomb on June 14. That case is still unsolved but police have strong surveillance photos of the subject, which can be found at http://ow.ly/22FHwt. They are looking for the public's help in identifying the man.

On Aug. 21, a man armed with a shotgun robbed the TD Bank at 300 Daniel Webster Highway.

Frank Mione, 47, of Milford, was arrested less than a week later, charged in connection to that robbery. Read more here http://ow.ly/22FIfs.

On Wednesday, Roy made note of the fact that this was the third bank robbery in town in about four months.

"With the increase of crime in the area, between here and Nashua and Manchester, I can only attribute it to being a sign of the times," Roy said. "People are desperate and resorting to what seems to be easy money."

Roy expects to have more details available later today, including the name of the suspect arrest information, and photos.

Patch will bring you more information as it becomes available.
