Furnace Malfunction Displaced MHS Students

Students in the newer wing of Merrimack High School were displaced to the gym for a short time this morning due to a furnace vent that was blocked by snow.

School Superintendent Marge Chiafery said Wednesday afternoon that the was in a meeting at the high school when someone came in and alerted Pincipal Ken Johnson that teachers and students in the new wing of the school were smelling an acrid odor.

Chiafery said they called the fire department because it seemed the furnace was malfunctioning.

Fire Chief Michael Currier said they ran a carbon monoxide check and determined there was no danger to the students but to get them out of the area where the odor was, the whole wing was evacuated to the gym.

Chiafery said an investigation determined the vent for the furnace on the roof was blocked by snow, and they were able to clear it up.

"It was all resolved very fast,"Vhiafery said. "We never alerted parents because there was never and danger to the students."

Chiafery said the students were displaced for about a half an hour before proceeding on with the rest of their day.
