Merrimack Winter Carnival on Saturday

There are plenty of offerings across the state.

Each week, we'll scour local event calendars in an attempt to bring you five fun things to do in New Hampshire:

1. Portsmouth Beer Week Kicks Off: The 5th annual Portsmouth Beer Week kicks off Saturday, Feb. 22 and runs through March 3. It includes a movie premiere, beer tastings and growler tours. For a full schedule, click here.

2. Merrimack Winter Carnival: The 22nd annual Merrimack Winter Carnival will be held at Wasserman Park in Merrimack on Saturday, Feb. 22, from noon to 3 p.m. Enjoy a day of free family activities, including snowman building, snow art, arts and crafts and an ice fishing derby. 3. Hudson Cardboard Sled Race: The annual Hudson Cool Runnings Cardboard Sled Race will be held on Sunday, Feb. 23 from noon to 2 p.m. At home, build your own sled using only cardboard, duct tape, paint and any adhesive. No metal or wood can be used. Helmets are suggested. Waivers must be signed and are available the day of the race at registration. Registration begins at 12 and race starts at 1 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

4. Doggie Paddle Plunge: The 4th annual Doggie Paddle Plunge to benefit the animals at the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at noon at Great Island Common in New Castle. Check-in is at 11 a.m. Participants raise critically needed funds by asking friends, family, etc. to support their jumping into the icy Atlantic Ocean.

5. Improvised Shakespeare Company: The Improvised Shakespeare Company will perform a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. at the Capitol Center for the Arts. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for students. Click here for details.
