Skate Park Riders Display Courage, Work Ethic

As skate park gets rolling with another season on O'Gara Drive, attendant Juni Pierce has high praise for its visitors.

Ask her six years ago, and Juni Pierce wouldn't have guessed where her next step in life would take her. The retired Nashua gym teacher – who has also taught in at least a handful of countries overseas – answered an ad in the paper six years ago looking for an attendant to oversee the Merrimack Skate Park on O'Gara Drive and more than half a decade later, if you're looking for Pierce in the afternoon or evening on any given day, you can find her on O'Gara Drive. Half an hour speaking with Pierce you can tell she clearly loves her part-time, post-retirement job. The way she speaks of the kids she gets to know year in and year out at the skate park, you'd think she was speaking of her own grandchildren. “The skate park kids are an incredible…

As Tyler Sundstrom's Mom I would like to take this opportunity to thank Juni Pierce. Without her I would not have been comfortable with Tyler being at the skate park. She is a wonderful person and is kind and supportive of all of the kids. She has influenced the children by showing them respect and demanding respect from them in turn the kids have a great respect for her. Thanks so much Juni for …   more ›

Hundreds Celebrate Opening Day for MYA Baseball

Share your photos from the opening day ceremony, parade and game.

Friday night was Merrimack Youth Association's Opening Day parade, ceremony and game at Bise Field. Master of Ceremonies Frank Saia revved up the kids and the crowd before introducing Ed Orleans, Assistant State Commissioner of Cal Ripken Baseball, who said a few words about the strength of the Merrimack baseball program. Merrimack High School Baseball player Justin Duhamel, known by his peers in the baseball community as Dewey, was then invited to throw out the first pitch. With the pitch thrown and the cry of "Let's play ball!" from the teams gathered around the in field, the season officially began. Do you have photos or video from opening day activities? Striders Say Running Community's Spirit Won't be Denied

Members of the Greater Nashua area's popular running club reflect on the Boston Marathon bombing.

Dozens of runners, from seasoned racers to social joggers, gathered at Nashua High School South for the first Gate City Striders track practice of 2013. Before practice, an email was sent to runners encouraging them to stand together in solidarity, wearing any Boston Marathon attire they might have in their collection. For those who didn't have anything, Dave Salvas, who was at the finish line of the marathon on Monday when the bomb went off, brought about a dozen marathon jackets that he's collected over the years. All around the track, runners represented Boston in their attire, silently paying tribute to the three spectators killed and the dozens wounded in Monday's bombing. Some wore black race-style bibs handed out before practice, …

Amherst Runner Was at the Finish Line When Bomb Blew

Dave Salvas said he realized immediately what was going on and got himself out of the danger zone as fast as he could.

Dave Salvas knew the loud explosion he heard just after he'd finished running 26.2 miles on Monday was not a celebratory explosion pretty quickly. Salvas, of Amherst, was in Boston running the Boston Marathon unofficially, pacing a friend of his and they'd just crossed the finish line when the first of two bombs rocked Boylston Street. "I knew when I saw the white smoke and debris flying that this wasn't something celebratory," Salvas said, adding that the first explosion left many in the area confused, looking around trying to figure out what had just happened. He likened the sound to that of a cannon, but said he knows enough about ceremonial cannon-fire that it wouldn't produce that kind of smoke, nor would it be fired in an area with …
