Stories of 2012: The Year of the Election

Join us as we count down the top stories of the year.

Merrimack Patch has it's first full year in the books and what a year it's been! We re-elected President Barack Obama to another four years, and hey, the Mayan apocalypse didn't happen, so congratulations, we're all still here. From the opening of the Merrimack Premium Outlets to another Halloween storm that cut power to thousands for days, there's been no shortage of news in town. We've seen businesses and residents in the community doing wonderful things to support their neighbors and communities as far away as Haiti. There's been business growth, and sadly a few closures. There have been exciting moments in sports with the boys varsity basketball state championship, the baseball team playing, but unfortunately losing their state …

Officials Pleased Overall With Election, Still Taking Suggestions

Traffic, parking, signage and poll hours all being examined before next election at high school in Nov. 2014.

It was “a perfect storm of events” that contributed to traffic difficulties on Election Day in Merrimack, but during a review at the Town Council meeting Thursday night, town officials agreed the election over all went very smoothly. Merrimack Police Chief Mark Doyle, who addressed some of the traffic concerns that arose on Nov. 6, said in the morning the higher-than-expected turnout before the doors even opened halted traffic when parking spaces filled to the max. People getting in line to vote at 6 a.m., an hour before the polls opened meant those parking spaces were locked up for more than an hour, preventing those who arrived a little later, or in time for the polls to open, from being able to drive down O'Gara Drive and McElwain …

The chief brought up lane control issues particularly upon exiting, when you have two lanes of traffic and people in one lane who realize they need to be going right but they are in the left lane. He mentioned queuing issues, with traffic spilling out onto Baboosic Lake and surrounding roads when you have more people going in than out. And also the residents of McElwain St. and the side streets …   more ›

Republicans Say Bragdon Should Lead Senate in 2013-14

Vote to be held Dec. 5.

Barring any major changes in a recount, state Sen. Peter Bragdon, R-Milford, will return to lead the State Senate as president. Republicans caucused recently and decided that Bragdon deserves another two-year term, according to a press statement. After the general election, Republicans appear to hold a 13-11 vote in the body of 24 members. In the District 9 race, Andy Sanborn, R-Bedford, beat Democrat Lee Nyquist by 210 votes. Nyquist filed for a recount, which will need to be held before Nov. 14, at the latest, according to state law. If the Republicans hold the seat and there isn’t a last minute revolt, Bragdon is a shoo-in for the presidency. Bragdon said he would be focusing on working with Democrats to craft a balanced budget and …

Thank you Hillsborough County voters for rejecting a county attorney who would not enter the courtroom to prosecute cases and instead choosing someone who is willing to serve as a real prosecutor! Patricia LaFrance will be a real county attorney.   more ›

VIDEO: Hassan Focused on 'Growing The Economy'

Governor-Elect Maggie Hassan talks about correcting political dysfunction and moving New Hampshire forward.

A 15-minute whistle stop at the small but storied Red Arrow Diner in Manchester was the first chance for Governor-Election Maggie Hassan to field questions about her specific plans, once sworn in as the 81st governor of New Hampshire. On the morning after a contentious campaign cycle came to a close, Hassan was asked about her Republican opponent, Ovide Lamontagne, and his sense that he was "demonized" by campaign ads; the state's brand new First-in-the-Nation status, for electing the country's first all-female congressional delegation; and she spoke about rising to what she she believes citizens want, which is a return to New Hampshire's "bi-partisan and non-partisan politics." Among those who showed up to congratulate Hassan Wednesday …

Officials: Single Polling Place at MHS the Best Decision

Morning rush to vote before work and significant evening traffic delays caused traffic headache at the polls but election officials say its better than the alternative.

It was Merrimack's first run at a single polling place since in about a decade and there are some kinks to work out, but despite a small wave of complaints about traffic from people who got stuck in tie-ups during the busiest hours in the morning and evening, election officials said this is the best way right now to conduct elections in town. A contingent of Merrimack Patch fans on Facebook have been heavy on the criticism of vehicular traffic flow and parking issues, especially early in the morning and just after work. Town Moderator Lynn Christensen said despite the complaints on social media, which she'd been monitoring throughout the day, she hadn't heard as much of it at the actual polls. State Rep. Candidates Lenette Peterson, Kim …

New Hampshire Makes History on Election Night

First all female Congressional Delegation elected, while Obama gets another shot in America.

New Hampshire made history on election night when voters elected Carol Shea-Porter and Anne McLane-Kuster to the U.S. House of Representatives over their incumbent opponents Frank Guinta and Charlie Bass, respectively. Shea-Porter and Kuster will join U.S. Sens. Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen in the Congressional delegation, making it the first all-female delegation in history. Maggie Hassan, D-Exeter, was also elected to succeed Gov. John Lynch, making her the second female governor in New Hampshire's history. Shaheen was the first. She beat Republican opponent Ovide Lamontagne, R-Manchester, in the race for New Hampshire's top elected position. And the Democratic wins were punctuated by the New Hampshire win of President Barack Obama, …

Yeah - having all women is our top priority in NH. Don't concern yourself with high prices, few job opportunities other than fast food, foreclosures and empty storefronts. HEY - we got inequality but we are women so it's OK. Talk about hypocrisy. Hope that equality stuff and those gay marriages, abortions and gree birth control will keep the economy rolling along.   more ›

Carol Shea-Porter Wins Seat Back From Frank Guinta

Race was a rematch from 2010 when Frank Guinta took seat from Carol Shea-Porter.

Update, 3 a.m.: U.S. Rep. Frank Guinta conceded the race with Carol Shea-Porter after the final numbers for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District came in:   “I would like to congratulate President Obama, Governor-elect Maggie Hassan, Congresswoman-elect Anne McLane Kuster and Congresswoman-elect Carol Shea-Porter on their victories. “What’s important in these races is the future of New Hampshire. I am committed to continuing my support of our constituents and a collaborative vision for a stronger America. I called Carol Shea-Porter early this morning. We had a great conversation as I pledged to her my commitment to transition the congressional office with integrity and respect.” Update, 2:30 a.m.: Carol Shea-Porter took the stage for …

Mr. Boyd from Merrimack needs some help finding the lightswitch of reality. Shea-Porter favors government intrustion into people's lives? Forgive me, I thought it was Guinta who was offering to let government determine a woman's reproductive health decisions on the strange premise that they can't do this themselves. Romney, Hassan Win Merrimack

Merrimack and New Hampshire disagree on president, agree on governor.

It probably comes as little surprise that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan garnered a win in Merrimack. Merrimack, known for being a very conservative community, has elected the Republican nominee in the three elections prior to this. In 2008, Merrimack picked John McCain and Sarah Palin over winners Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but only by 242 votes. McCain/Palin earned 7,558 votes to Obama/Biden's 7,316. In 2004, Merrimack voted in line with the country to re-elect George W. Bush and Dick Cheney to four more years. The Republican duo beat John Kerry and John Edwards 7,927 to 6,682 – a difference of 1,245 votes. In 2000, Merrimack favored the Bush/Cheney ticket over the Al Gore and Joe Lieberman ticket by  vote of 6,239 to 5,571 a difference of …
