Former Merrimack Police Chief Granville "Mitch" Stearns Jr. passed away on Nov. 21, at the age of 89, according to a note posted on the Merrimack Police Department Facebook page.
Stearns was a Merrimack Police Officer in the 1960s and 70s, serving as police chief from 1968-70.
According to an obituary printed in the Nashua Telegraph on Dec. 4, Stearns served in the Army during WWII and enjoyed traveling across the country following various career opportunities. He found a special place in his heart for Wyoming, where he became a police officer before serving on the Merrimack Police force. He also worked as a bus driver for the city of Nashua and retired as a school bus driver in Merrimack where he lived for the last 50 years.
A memorial service to celebrate Stearns will be Friday, Dec. 6 at St. James United Methodist Church in Merrimack at 6:30 p.m.
